SMASHABLE POEMS
“I smashed a fortune cookie and it was AMAZING. I’m still riding the high, like I did something naughty but it was so cathartic” - Lindsay W.
Smashable Poems is a series of ceramic objects that each contain a poem hidden inside. The text can only be accessed by breaking the object, requiring an act of destruction to reveal its contents.
This project explores themes of value, fragility, and access, questioning what we protect, what we are willing to sacrifice, and what is considered worth breaking for. By placing meaning inside a carefully crafted form, the work creates tension between preservation and revelation.
The objects invite viewers to consider the relationship between container and content, permanence and loss, and whether understanding sometimes requires irreversible change.
In 2025, I made and sold over 150 smashable poem fortune cookies. The poems were written by Durham Poet Laureate Chris Vitiello aka “The Poetry Fox”.
In 2026, I plan to make more in new shapes and collaborate with new poets.
